Sankranti

Sankranti, also known as Makar Sankranti, is one of the most significant and widely celebrated harvest festivals in India, marking the solar transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara) and the arrival of longer, warmer spring days. Observed annually in mid-January, this multi-day festival is an expression of deep gratitude to nature, the Sun God (Surya), and farm animals for a bountiful crop yield. The celebration is beautifully multi-faceted: courtyards are adorned with complex, colorful geometric patterns called muggulu or rangoli, skies transform into a kaleidoscope of competitive kite flying, and households overflow with the aroma of freshly harvested rice cooked with jaggery, alongside sesame-and-jaggery sweets that symbolize sweetness and togetherness.
